Promeso “LambethParks”

"I will send my newly elected councillor an email using www.writetothem.com asking that they review their current policy regarding the fencing off of events in Lambeth Parks but only if 15 other local people will do the same."

Fight for Lambeth Parks to be accessible and open to community events!

Lambeth council has effectively made the holding of small free/charitable events in our parks impossible by requiring organisers to pay for the erection of fences around the sites. Its latest press release regarding the application by a South London Green fair to be held in Brockwell Park states:

"...conditions require that if more than 2000 people are expected to attend an event, we always, as a matter of routine, stipulate that fencing is erected round the event site."

As a resident living on the perimeter of Brockwell park, the consequences of this policy change have become immediately apparent to me:

Last year's Fair4life - a free music festival, whose profits were destined for organisations that look for solutions to many of the problems faced by cancer sufferers - suffered financial losses as a result of this policy. The organisers are not reapplying for a licence this year.

This year's South London Green Fair has been cancelled. In a press release by the organisers, Shane Collins specifically cites the council's decision as the reason for the cancellation:

"The reason the organisers have taken this decision is that we are unable to comply with Lambeth Council’s interpretation of the new licencing laws and it’s decision to demand fencing around any free event of 2000 people or more in Lambeth."

He continues to say:

"The fence issue has already caused the ‘Cuban Carnival’ to move out of Lambeth. Last year ‘Fair for Life’, a free event aiming to raise money for cancer relief ended up losing money due to the costs of a kilometer-long fence. They have not re-applied for an event this year. ‘Portugal Day’ in Kennington Park does not want the cost or the imposition of a fence."

I would like to see small/free charitable events, which do not affect my access to Lambeth parks encouraged, as opposed to events requiring a ticket which limit residents' access. As such, I will write to my newly elected councillor through http://www.writetothem.com/ asking them to research alternative methods of implementing the new licensing laws - perhaps by examining other councils who have avoided resorting to such measures. I will also ask that ultimately the council reviews its policy in order not to penalise or discourage the occurence of community festivals in Brockwell Park and other Lambeth parks.
